PhD ­ Uncertainty in Deep Learning

When it comes to practical application of deep learning methods to mission critical real­ world problems, safety is crucial. Postdoctoral research on deep video compression and enhancement (Tecniospring Industry call)

We are searching for excellent candidates with a PhD in Computer Science (or similar field) interested in conducting research in visual compression and enhancement with deep neural networks. The context of this project is an ongoing collaboration between the Computer Vision Center (CVC) at Barcelona and the BBC R&D at London. The contract depends on the successful application to the next Tecniospring INDUSTRY call (in either modality: outgoing+return or incoming). This talent program provides an excellent opportunity for career development.

Project description
This project will investigate novel learned image compression approaches, together with machine learning-based image enhancement and restoration techniques, in order to improve the quality and user experience of broadcasting content and archive footage. BBC R&D will provide expertise in standard video coding, image restoration and access to professional video content, and CVC will provide expertise in neural image compression, generative models and deep learning. The project will also benefit from a secondment at the University of Cambridge, where the researcher will gain expertise in advanced probabilistic models and Bayesian frameworks, and their application to the project.

Required qualifications
We are looking for excellent and self-motivated candidates with:
- PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Telecommunications or any other relevant field.
- Two or more years of postdoctoral full-time research experience.
- Strong programming skills.
- Excellent publication record in relevant top journals (e.g. PAMI, TIP, TMM, TCSVT) and conferences (e.g. CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR).

Tecniospring INDUSTRY call and eligibility
Tecniospring INDUSTRY is a talent recruitment program of the Catalan government which funds two-year contracts of experienced researchers in order to develop applied research projects oriented towards technology transfer. It is co-financed by the Catalan government and the H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions. It considers two modalities:
- Mobility A: Outgoing and return. One year abroad and one in Catalonia. One year at BBC R&D (London) and another at CVC (Barcelona) in our case.
- Mobility B: Incoming. Two-year contract in a Catalan company. Two years at CVC in our case, with possibility to carry out a secondment at BBC R&D.

This program finances companies or technology centers with 58500 Eur/year for salary costs. In the case of Mobility B, during the year abroad this amount is corrected on a per country basis (up to aprox 85000 Eur/year in the case of the UK). The program also provides additional funding for research expenditures: research costs (15240 Eur/2 years), mobility (up to 1920 Eur/2 years) and open access publication (3000 Eur/2 years), in addition to training activities in technology transfer. Overall, it provides an excellent opportunity for career development.

Tecniospring INDUSTRY requires transnational mobility. This means that the candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activities (work, studies, etc.) in Spain or in the country of destination (mobility B) for more than 12 months during the 3 years prior to the call's deadline.

Postdoc

The computer vision group at Boston University (BU) is looking for a postdoc in the areas of joint vision and language modeling and learning with limited supervision. Research Associate or Senior Research Associate in Video Monitoring – ‘‘SPHERE Next Steps’’ Project

The role

This research is part of the SPHERE Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration (http://www.irc-sphere.ac.uk/), which has been developing a sensor platform for the home to diagnose and help manage health and wellbeing conditions since October 2013.

The successful candidate will work within the Video Analytics Work Package of the SPHERE NEXT STEPS project, but also collaborate with colleagues in other work packages to develop algorithms and associated models and software to perform computer vision and machine learning tasks.

The successful candidate will work together with several academic staff and the existing RA in a team to investigate algorithms and models for analysing and understanding human behaviour and activity and behaviour, gait and facial and emotion expression in cluttered and uncontrolled home environments. The research and software development will involve feature detection and tracking, deep learning techniques, statistical modelling and analysis, the use of one or more cameras, and many other relevant topics. The post involves close collaboration with other SPHERE project personnel – from other work packages within the project, including integration of other sensors, data fusion and data mining.

What will you be doing

Postdoctoral fellow - Surgical AI / computer vision

MIT/CSAIL's Distributed Robotics Lab in collaboration with Mass. General Hospital’s Department of Surgery and Surgical Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Laboratory are looking for a smart and energetic machine learning/computer vision postdoctoral candidate for a project aimed at revolutionizing the way surgery works. Candidates should have good knowledge of probability and inference, machine learning, and basic knowledge in computer vision with some experience in one or more deep learning frameworks.

The project is a two-year project with possibility for extension and has the potential to grow toward both a research and a commercialization track. The project includes both inference/computationally novel aspects, as well as clinical ones. Computational elements include computer vision and modeling/ML aspects aimed to revolutionize the way we understand surgery and assist surgeons.

Candidates will have the opportunity to work with novel datasets that combine streaming surgical data with datasets of clinical outcomes and procedural quality. The project has the potential to significantly redefine the delivery and quality of surgical care in both resource rich and poor settings.

The PLF HUB research focuses on assisting the management of animals by continuous, automated, real-time monitoring of production/reproduction, health and welfare, hence integrating a bioengineering approach to human-animal interactions with broad applications and benefits. This PhD position is organised in collaboration between the PLF HUB, the Clinical Unit of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Intensive-Care Medicine of the Vetmeduni Vienna and M3-BIORES (Measure, Model, Manage Bioresponses), KU Leuven, Belgium.

Responsibilities
This PhD project is focused on development of automated methods for image based monitoring of pain in horses. The project will have several phases. In the first phase, the focus will be on a post hoc investigation of videos to develop an algorithm for automated classification of horse behaviour. This will allow establishing the technological foundation and will help to acquire basic knowledge about the influence of pain on behaviour. In a further step, an algorithm for real-time pain assessment will be developed. In the final step, the algorithm will be developed into a tool that can be used under clinical conditions. The potential of real-time application of the tool for everyday use at the clinic will be further investigated.

The candidate should be motivated, independent and reliable. The project is ideally suited for students with a strong quantitative background in computer science, engineering, or the physical sciences who has a passion to do high level applied research in a very engaged and ambitious research team. The project will combine behavioural observations on animals, analysis of dynamic variation of sensor signals, algorithm development and algorithm validation. The work will be conducted in English or German language. The starting date is negotiable.

3D research. To survey, design, prototype and evaluate algorithms in the broad areas of 3D Computer Vision. Propose new ideas, speculate performance, gather testing data, conduct evaluation, pinpoint problems, iterate and improve performance, and write algorithm code, technical reports, patent disclosures, as well as research papers. Interested research areas including but not limited to:
- camera calibration, sensor distortion correction, camera pose localization, best camera positioning planning;
- geometrical 3D reconstruction (Structure-from-Motion, SLAM, stereo, Multiview Stereo, etc.);
- depth sensing from RGBD cameras (point cloud processing, alignment & registration);

Business-driven technology development. Algorithm evaluation and deployment. Optimize algorithms and apply them to real business applications. Collaborate closely with other researchers and engineers to fast iteration from prototyping to reliable and scalable production.

External collaboration. Conduct discussion and collaboration with university professors and their students. Mentor and guide research intern for publication at top-tier Computer Vision conferences and patent filing in 3D research domain.
